In the late 1700's, during the presidencies of George Washington and John Adams, Governor's House was the residence of Governor Edward Rutledge, South Carolina patriot, statesman and the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence. Henrietta Middleton, the Governor's wife, was part of the prominent Charleston family whose name now graces Middleton Place plantation and gardens.
